Water Spray Pest Control

Using a garden hose with an adjustable nozzle to blast pests off leaves and stems with plain water. The jet physically dislodges or damages soft-bodied insects — aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, thrips — and most never make it back onto the plant.

It controls light-to-moderate infestations without any pesticide, so the ladybugs, lacewings, and other beneficial insects that eat those same pests stay alive and keep working for you. Caught early — a dozen aphids instead of a few hundred — water alone is often all you need.

Check leaf undersides and new growth, where colonies start. Set the nozzle to a firm jet — strong enough to dislodge pests, not so strong it shreds leaves. Spray the undersides of leaves and along stems, not just the tops. Repeat every 2–3 days for a week or so until the population collapses.

Spray in the early morning so foliage dries before evening, which limits fungal disease. Stick to sturdy plants; support tender seedlings with your hand or use a gentler stream. If a colony has exploded past what water can handle, escalate to insecticidal soap before anything harsher.
